How to Sew a Handmade Mini Scrunchie

Something we all want to be able to master at our sewing machine is scrunchies! And in most cases, scrunchies are so quick and easy, and because of that they are typically among the first sewing projects we encounter when we first begin sewing!

In this post, I’ll show you how to make your very own mini scrunchie! Mini scrunchies are perfect for children and even adults that have thin to medium hair thickness (like me!). This is an easy tutorial with plenty of pictures to help you understand the process. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. So, without further ado, let’s get crafting!

Getting Started

Materials needed:

  • Thin Elastic (around 6mm) cut to size
  • I recommend cutting 8” in length, and this will wrap about 2 to 3 times around your hair when tying it up.
  • Fabric cut to size
  • You will need about 20″ in length and between 4” and 2.5” for the width. The smaller the width, the harder it is to work with. I recommend going with a size in the middle; 3” will be a nice size to work with.
  • The non-pointy end of a long knitting needle or something similar that is long but not too pointy (I know, weird right? But stay with me here.)
  • A safety pin

Basics to already have on hand:

  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape/tool
  • Sewing pins

Let’s Sew!

  1. Fold your pre-cut fabric length-ways right sides together.
  2. Sew about ¼ or ½ an inch from the folded edges length-ways, backstitching at both ends.

Tip:

The further away from the raw edge you sew, the smaller the width of the fabric will be around the scrunchie, and so it depends on how much of the scrunchie you want sticking out. However, keep in mind it also might make it harder to turn inside out at the end.

  1. Use your knitting needle (long tool) or your safety pin to flip the scrunchie inside out.

See below for some different ways you can flip your scrunchie:

  1. Attach your safety pin to one end of your loop and push it up through the loop, pulling the fabric in the opposite direction until the fabric is the right side out.
  1. Place one edge of the top of your scrunchie loop onto the rounded (not pointy) end of your knitting needle and push the needle upwards while pulling the fabric downwards (not letting go of your edge you placed onto the needle)
  1. Once the scrunchie is inside out, you can move on to inserting the elastic. Attach your safety pin onto one end of your elastic and insert the elastic in one end of your now right-side-facing scrunchie loop and feed through to the end. Make sure you hold on to the end of your elastic, so you don’t lose it while you feed the rest through to the other side.
  1. Now holding both sides of the elastic, which has successfully been fed through the scrunchie loop, tie a double knot. Make sure this is a tight knot.
  1. Close the gap by folding one end of the scrunchie loop’s raw edges inside itself and feeding the second scrunchie loop (the one with the raw edges showing) inside the first folded loop, overlapping the fabric.
  1. Sew along this nicely folded seam. Be sure to adjust your tension here, as you are sewing over elastic!
  1. Give it a tug and scrunch, and there you go! You did it! You’ve made a scrunchie!

If you’ve reached this far, I want to say thank you!

This is my first-ever blog post, so you, taking the time to read and create a mini scrunchie from my blog, is a dream come true! I absolutely love talking about art and all things creative, so I am keen to bring out craftier “how to’s” and other types of content soon. So, watch this space!

You can find me on Pinterest @thehandmadehomemaker and will soon be coming out with an email subscription later in 2025, so watch out for that too!

Thanks again, Aria xx
